This Wartsila diesel generating set has been used exclusively for testing purposes by VTT Technical Research Centre of Finland and has accumulated only 7,430 operating hours since new. Originally, it was built as a conventional diesel engine capable of burning various heavy fuels with viscosities of up to 730 cSt at 50°C. The engine was subsequently upgraded by Wartsila to comply with the LN-E model specification for their 32-series engines and it was equipped with adequate fuel feeding systems, cylinder heads, pistons and liners for dual fuel (DF) and gas diesel (GD) operation. The upgrade included the installation of anti-polishing rings, an increase in engine output, and the implementation of a completely new control system.
The device has been used to test various fuels and components for Wärtsilä. It has been maintained exclusively by Wärtsilä and is still in good technical condition. It currently runs on natural gas. It can be converted to run on diesel with the included components.
Over the years, Wartsila has installed new components and control systems. At present, the engine is equipped to operate in three different modes:
As a conventional diesel engine using heavy fuel oil (HFO);
As a Wartsila 32DF (Dual Fuel) engine using natural gas and light diesel oil;
As a Wartsila GD (Gas Diesel) engine, where gas is compressed to high pressure and injected into the cylinder, ignited by a pilot dose of light diesel oil.
Naturally, to switch between modes, certain components—such as the turbocharger, cylinder liners, pistons, and cylinder heads—must be changed. The engine is currently configured for dual-fuel operation (DF) with diesel-mode liners installed.
The delivery includes a large number of spare parts and accessories.
Expert assistance is available for re-installation by separate agreement.
